A 39-year-old driver died when a car and a lorry collided on the M5 northbound between junctions 3 and 4 on Tuesday 6 October. Police want dashcam footage.

A 39-year-old man died on the M5 on Tuesday night after the car he was driving collided with a lorry. The crash happened on the northbound carriageway between junction 3, for Halesowen, and junction 4 at Lydiate Ash, the Bromsgrove junction. Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage from that stretch to get in touch.

West Midlands Police said officers and other emergency services were called “at just after 9.40pm” on Tuesday 6 October. “Despite the best efforts of paramedics, a 39-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene,” the force said. His family have been informed and are being supported.

What the police have said

The force’s statement, published on Wednesday 7 October, gives these details:

  • The collision involved a car and a lorry on the M5 northbound between junctions 3 and 4.
  • The driver of the lorry “is assisting with enquiries”.
  • The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is working to establish the exact circumstances.
  • The carriageway was closed “for a number of hours” while the scene was forensically examined, and reopened at around 8am on Wednesday.

The police have not named the man who died, and have not said exactly where between the two junctions the collision happened. West Mercia Police, whose area begins at the county boundary south of Frankley, has not published a statement of its own.

A third fatal collision since September

This is the third fatal crash on roads serving Bromsgrove that we have reported in a month. A motorcyclist died on the M42 between Portway and Hopwood in September, and a cyclist in his 80s died after a collision on the A38 at New Road later the same month. All three remain under investigation.

What it means for you

  • If you were driving north on the M5 between Halesowen and Lydiate Ash at around 9.40pm on Tuesday 6 October, check your dashcam. Police want any footage from around the time of the collision, even if you did not see anything happen.
  • How to send it: call 101, use the force’s Live Chat at westmidlands.police.uk, or email SCIU@westmidlands.police.uk. Quote log 5590 of 6 October.
  • The motorway is open. The northbound carriageway reopened on Wednesday morning and there is no continuing closure linked to the collision. For planned closures and roadworks on the M5, M42 and A38 this month, see our Bromsgrove roadworks and travel page.

We will update this page if the police publish further information.
