Two things decide whether living in Bromsgrove works for a commuter, and only one of them is on the timetable board. The first is that Birmingham New Street is 23 to 34 minutes away, four trains an hour in the morning peak. The second is that there is no direct train from Bromsgrove to London: every London journey means getting off at New Street and starting again.

Bromsgrove to Birmingham: the journey that actually matters
Bromsgrove station sits on New Road (B60 2LX) and is managed by West Midlands Railway. It has lifts and is rated step-free category A, National Rail’s top grade, meaning step-free access to every platform. The ticket office is open 06:00 to 19:15 Monday to Friday, 06:30 to 19:15 on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.
Morning departures for Birmingham New Street are frequent but not evenly spaced. On a sample weekday they left at 07:03, 07:23, 07:29, 07:42 and 08:03, so four trains inside the 07:00 hour but with a 20-minute gap at the start of it and a six-minute gap in the middle. The quickest of those, the 07:23, is into New Street at 07:46, a 23-minute run. The slowest of the five takes 34 minutes; the rest land between 27 and 30.
Walk-up fares are the same whichever train you take: £8.20 for an anytime day single, £9.80 for an anytime day return.
The first train of the day leaves Bromsgrove at 06:18, reaching New Street at 06:45. If your shift starts before 07:00 in the city, the train does not help you.

The Birmingham season is worth a moment. At £1,560 a year it covers travel into any of the three central Birmingham stations by any permitted route, which means Moor Street and Snow Hill as well as New Street. Against the 232 or so working days in a year that is about £6.72 a day, comfortably less than the £9.80 you would pay buying a return each morning.
Bromsgrove to London: no direct train, and two very different routes
Every London journey from Bromsgrove involves a change, almost always at Birmingham New Street. What you pay depends entirely on which train you catch out of New Street.
The fast route. Bromsgrove to New Street, then an Avanti West Coast service to London Euston. On a normal weekday the 10:03 gets you to Euston at 12:06, 2 hours 3 minutes door to door, and the 10:29 arrives at 12:38 in 2 hours 9 minutes. An off-peak return on this route is £75.70; advance singles start around £68 and rise steeply.
The slow route. The same first leg, then a West Midlands or London Northwestern train from New Street. The 10:03 on this route reaches Euston at 13:17, 3 hours 14 minutes. The compensation is the fare: a super off-peak return is £34.30, an off-peak return £46.90, and advance singles start at £13.00. That is less than half the fast fare for an hour and a bit more of your day.
This split is the single most useful thing to know about travelling to London from here. The cheap tickets and the cheap season are both marked “West Midlands and London Northwestern only”, which means they buy you the three-hour journey. If you need the two-hour one, you are on Avanti fares.

The earliest arrival in London is 08:38 at Euston, off the 06:29 from Bromsgrove.
Coming home, the 21:06 from Euston is the last realistic train, getting into Bromsgrove at 23:20. Miss it and the next arrival is 06:24 the following morning: the 23:30 from Euston reaches Birmingham at 01:32 and then leaves you there until 05:53. There is no late-night option worth planning around.

The station car park is run by Excel Parking Services, not by the council, and it has 350 spaces including 17 accessible bays.
